Momma Duck & Ducklings Rescue Efforts
In the spring/summer of 2021 our farmers found a momma duck had laid her eggs in the garden. The momma duck found the perennials and vegetables delicious! We knew we would have to move the momma duck and her ducklings once they hatched, because they could risk falling off the roof on their search for water. In late June, after they had hatched, City Wildlife came to safely relocate the momma duck & ducklings to Constitution Gardens to live out their days.

About beehives:
• At the height of the season, each hive contains up to 50,000 individual bees.
• Approximately 90% of the bees in the hive are workers (females), and 10% are drones (males).
• Honeycombs are quite literally the heart of the beehive. Each cell in the honeycomb is built from wax secreted by the bees. These cells are used to store all of the elements that are crucial to the survival of the colony and its development: resources (nectar, honey and pollen) and brood (eggs, larvae and pupae).
About the Members of the Hive:
• There is only one queen per hive. In ideal conditions, Her Majesty can live for up to five years. She requires a court of bees to help feed, hydrate and clean her, as she is too busy laying up to 2,000 eggs daily to do it herself.
• Male bees within the hive do not have stingers. Instead, they have a reproductive system. Drones do not forage for resources, as their primary role is to mate with a virgin queen from another hive.
• Worker bees may only live between 30 and 45 days, but they occupy a variety of different roles during that time: cleaning, nursing, building, fanning, guarding and foraging.

Over the course of the 2021 growing season, nearly 200lbs of kale, swiss chard, collard greens, and fresh herbs were harvested from the IFC Rooftop Garden. These vegetables were distributed to Dreaming Out Loud, a District of Columbia based organization working to create economic opportunities for the D.C. metro region’s marginalized communities through building a healthy, equitable food system.

Bare rooftops absorb and then radiate heat, causing the temperature in urban areas to be a few degrees higher than surrounding areas and causing buildings to increase their energy use in effort to cool the building. Rooftop gardens remove heat from the air via evapotranspiration which reduces the temperature of the roof surface and surrounding air. This lowers the need to energy use to cool the building, as well as contributes to lowering the urban heat island effect.

Annual vegetables are grouped together with an eye towards crop rotation over multiple seasons. Crop rotation is an important aspect of organic gardening to avoid the use of pesticides and fungicides. Collards and chard as well as peppers and okra are susceptible to similar pests and disease. By grouping them together we are able to rotate to a different family of vegetables next year, such as cucumbers, carrots, or radishes. This lessens the year-over-year pest and disease pressure. Our farmers also chose the group of vegetables based on preferences from their non-profit partner organization, Dreaming Out Loud.

Our farmers advocate for the inclusion of beehives whenever possible. Pollination is very important in a garden, and that can be difficult to achieve on rooftops in dense urban areas. Our farmers constantly see the bees pollinating the various flowering plants they have in our garden and can say with certainty that our friends, the bees, are increasing the harvest.

HTMLText_D3E121B9_54F3_D358_41D1_0CFC545160C2.html = A honey bee (also spelled honeybee) is a eusocial flying insect within the genus Apis of the bee clade, all native to Eurasia. They are known for their construction of perennial colonial nests from wax, the large size of their colonies, and surplus production and storage of honey, distinguishing their hives as a prized foraging target of many animals, including honey badgers, bears and human hunter-gatherers. Only eight surviving species of honey bee are recognized, with a total of 43 subspecies, though historically 7 to 11 species are recognized. Honey bees represent only a small fraction of the roughly 20,000 known species of bees.
The best known honey bee is the western honey bee (Apis mellifera), which has been domesticated for honey production and crop pollination; the only other domesticated bee is the eastern honey bee (Apis cerana), which occurs in South Asia. Some other types of related bees produce and store honey, and have been kept by humans for that purpose, including the stingless bees, but only members of the genus Apis are true honey bees. Modern humans also value the wax for use in making candles, soap, lip balms, and various cosmetics.
